Honoring PFC Robert L. Evans: Tribute WOD – August 8

On Saturday, August 8, our CrossFit Townie community will come together to honor the life and legacy of Private First Class Robert L. Evans.

This workout is especially meaningful to us because Robert was the brother of our member, Kelly Johnston. While many tribute workouts recognize military service, this one gives us the opportunity to remember someone whose story has touched our own community.

On September 8, 1979, a military helicopter carrying 14 people, military personnel and civilians, crashed during a military operation. Seven people survived, and seven tragically lost their lives, including PFC Robert L. Evans.

Every part of this workout was designed with purpose:

  • 7 rounds represent the seven individuals who did not survive.
  • 4 push-ups honor the four military survivors.
  • 9 air squats represent the month of September.
  • 8 pull-ups represent the 8th day of the month.
  • 79 burpees represent the year 1979.

Although Robert's life was forever linked to the events of September 8, 1979, his story continued to impact those around him for decades. He passed away on September 6, 2025, after battling pancreatic cancer, but his memory lives on through his family, friends, and now through our community.

At CrossFit Townie, we believe fitness is about more than reps and scores. It's about using our abilities to honor those who came before us, supporting one another, and remembering that every workout is a privilege.

Whether you're a longtime member, a first-time visitor, or someone who simply wants to help us honor Robert's memory, we invite you to join us.
